Career in Mechanical Engineering

What is a mechanical engineer? A mechanical engineer is someone who will use science and math to create and develop solutions for issues found in manufacturing, construction, and engine design. They also build and test devices such as tools, machines, and engines. For the most part, a mechanical engineer will work in an office setting but can on occasion be at a worksite to monitor or fix an issue if the need arises. Otherwise they work at the office investigating why certain errors occurred, finding a solution to those errors, and look to develop alternate designs or plans to avoid future issues.
What are the education requirements for a mechanical engineer? You will need at least a bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering if you wish to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer. You need to have some basic understanding of certain subjects such as electrical engineering, civil engineering, and even chemical engineering.
Once you complete your college career, you can choose to advance even further and earn a master’s or doctoral degree in mechanical engineering. This will provide a more advanced and thorough education in the subject matter and can open up more job prospects when you apply for employment.
Do you need to be licensed to a mechanical engineer? Yes, you will need to acquire your PE (Professional Engineer) licensure regardless of what state you reside in. The requirements needed to obtain your PE is a bachelor’s degree from a university or college that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and need to have a certain amount of work experience with a licensed engineer. Along with acquiring your license you will need to also pass an exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
Should you pursue a career in mechanical engineering? Being a mechanical engineer is not for everyone. You will put in a lot of hours and hard work just to become a candidate for a job in this field. However, if you have a strong foundation in math and science and if you enjoy the process of researching, building, and testing new devices then this is an ideal career path for you. If you do decide to pursue your doctorate or master’s degree, you can eventually be employed in an executive position. So carefully consider the path you wish to take for this career.
