Dress Professionally For Your Internship and Interviews

Heather is a recent college graduate who spends her free time as a freelance writer. In addition, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with friends.

If you are just starting out your college career, chances are internships and interviews are far from your mind. However, it is best to start thinking about what you will wear ahead of time, so you are not rushing around at the last minute. What happens if you get an unexpected opportunity for an interview or to meet with the president of a company? It is best to be prepared, and in today’s industry, networking is key – make a great impression!

Plus, if you start now, you can begin to acquire workplace-friendly pieces that work with your college budget. If you wait until you need these things, chances are you will forced to buy items at full price, in addition to adding unnecessary stress to your already hectic schedule.

There are a few essential pieces that you should begin to look for. These are pieces that can be worn year-round.

#1 Black Dress Pants – Black dress pants are one of the most universal items you can own in your closet.

#2 Professional Blouses – Blouses should be long enough so that when you bend over, your back is not showing, and come high enough on your chest so that you are not showing too much. Bend over in the mirror before buying! I would also recommend purchasing shirts that are black, white or grey in color so that they can be worn year-round.

#3 Black Jacket or Blazer – While a jacket or blazer is not always necessary for an internship, it is a must for an interview. I own two – one that has ¾ sleeves and is made of linen and another jacket that has full-length sleeves and is a thicker material.

But remember – only buy items on sale! I would recommend shopping close to the end of a season, as that is when you can typically find the best sales.
