What are the educational requirements for a computer technician

While a formal undergraduate education is not required to become a computer support technician, it is strongly advised that students enroll in a training program at a community college to understand the technical terms and approach involved in this industry. There are a number of colleges in the United States which offer this type of training in the form of an associate degree program, which normally takes two years to complete.
Following graduation, students have the option to work for private and public organizations across various sectors since most of them these days require information technology support resources. However, because these programs produce a large number of graduates every year, the field of computer support is very competitive. You may need to incorporate some sort of related working experience in your portfolio in order to gain a competitive advantage over your peers.
For students are thinking of pursuing a post-secondary education in this area, here are some of the courses that they can expect to take:
• Introduction to computer programming: These courses are designed to help students understand how to construct computer programs. These skills are important to developing and implementing solutions to some of the most common computer issues.
• Essentials to computer networking and technology: Most computers within an organization are connected to a network. Students will learn about the importance of networks and how computers, servers, devices are connected and how the transfer of data and information affect the system’s operations.
• Introduction to open source computing: As many programs are now being developed in an open source format, it is important for students to learn about open source software in order to have an alternate approach to solving some of the software issues.
• Technical math: These courses are designed to provide an overview of the basic math involved in programming. Students will learn basics algebra and how they apply to programming algorithm.
• Server operating systems: Server operating systems form the backend of a company’s IT system. It sis the hub that connects all computers to a central location and where the backup data may be stored. Students need to understand how server operating systems affect the business and the best practices which companies have in place in this area to ensure data security.
• Network security: Students will learn about the different types of threats to an organization’s network security and some of the common approaches which businesses have taken to address the issue. They will also learn about their roles as the computer support technician in protecting the company from such threats.
• PC hardware and operating systems: Students will learn about the hardware components in a computer and what they will require to diagnose the issues.
