Fight the Sizzle

There are so many wonderful things about summer. School is out, the weather is warm, and everyone seems more carefree and fun loving. With all the benefits of summer it is hard to think of a downside. When I get out in the sun though, I quickly remember that my least favorite thing is frying my light skin to a nice splotchy red. After a burn it hurts to shower, wear anything with straps, and makes the idea of spending time outside sound like torture.
I don’t care how tan you want to get this summer, it is SO much more important to protect your skin and your health than to look several shades darker by the time school starts again. You know that UV rays can cause skin cancer, but did you know that the sun is also the second leading cause for signs of advanced aging? You might get tan now without sunscreen, but that tan is temporary and will fade. What doesn’t go away is the sun spots and wrinkles that come from all those days outside without skin protection.
If the latest research on sun damage and skin cancer still isn’t enough to persuade you to always lather on SPF you’re not alone. Maybe it takes an instant negative consequence to keep you safe. One huge and immediate con of spending time in the sun without sunblock is lobster red skin. Tomato red skin does not look attractive in pictures and you know you secretly can’t wait to spam up your friends’ Instagram and Facebook feeds with your sunset on the beach and poolside pics this summer.
To make sure that you stay healthy, fresh faced and looking fine throughout this next summer start simple. Buy a daily moisturizer that has an SPF of at least 30. Put it on after you wash your face and before makeup. If going outside apply sunscreen while still indoors so you can put it all over, even under your bathing suit. This protects you from getting those bright red lines right next to your bathing suit since your suit lays differently on your body when laying down. Last, but not least, reapply. Make sure if you sweat, swim, or have been outside for more than 30 minutes that you put on more protection. Reapplying sunscreen is a small hassle compared to dealing with skin cancer.
If you can’t handle the idea of not looking tan this summer, buy a great sunless tanner. You really have no excuses since these products are readily available. Make sure to protect your skin and you will be able to enjoy the sun all summer long.
