You will learn how to mix popular drinks, recognize certain liquors, and understand certain bartending techniques, and glassware. Again, it’s not a mandatory step but it is something to highly consider if you want to seriously pursue a career in bartending. While you are taking classes, it is ideal to start looking for potential positions. Unlike other vocational programs or classes, bartending schools usually do not guarantee you will find a job upon completion.
If you prefer to not pursue any bartending classes there are other ways to work your way to become a bartender. You can work as a barback or cocktail server at a lounge, bar, or nightclub. Even though you are just serving drinks or an assistant to the bartender you will gain the experience you need. Eventually you will become familiar with certain methods and drinks and can eventually be trained by the bartender working there. It may take some time to learn everything you need to know, but with some hard work and due diligence, you will be able to work your way up the ladder and into a bartending position.
Some states will require you to earn a bartender certification. You will need to research whether or not the state you work in will require you to have a certification. If it is mandatory, getting a certification is fairly simple and can be done online.
Should you be a bartender?
Like any job, a bartending job will require some time and training. However, if you are interested in this as a career, take your time and learn everything you need to know. The hours may be long but if you love your career it will be worth it.
