What is a customer representative?
Customer service representatives are workers who customers contact when they wish to speak to a company or business. They are responsible for taking care of customer inquiries, concerns, issues, or general questions and work toward finding a solution that will resolve and address all of the customer’s concerns. Depending on the business, a customer service rep can speak with customers on the phone, email, or even through live chat. While companies may have different approaches or techniques, they usually all have the same main goal of customer satisfaction.
What are the education requirements for a customer service representative?
If you wish to become a customer service representative, you will need the minimum of a high school diploma or General Education Development diploma. With your diploma or GED, you will be able to apply for an entry-level position as a customer service representative. However those who wish to continue their career and have a chance to move up in rank to a managerial position, you will need to have at least a college degree in business or a similar field.
What work experience is needed for a customer service representative?
Generally, there is no need for previous work experience when it comes to getting a position in this career. Usually companies will have candidates enter a training program. These training sessions can vary on their length. Some can be as short as four weeks while others can be eight weeks or more. The training is dependent on how much the candidate needs to know and also what type of computer software programs they need to become versed in.
Besides the training, it is important to be computer literate before you apply for a job in customer service. Most if not all companies have their representatives log all the information into a computer system. So the more knowledgeable you are the quicker you will be able to pick up any training programs or sessions.
It is also important to be willing to learn about new programs as well. Some companies will evolve and get new software or technology and in order to grow as an employee, you must be willing to learn. No company wants a person who is not open to continuing their education, especially when it comes to the growth of their business.
What is the salary of a customer service representative?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage is $14.70. Of course, each company’s pay can differ depending on experience and rank. The more experience you have, the more likely you will have a higher base pay. Some companies may pay more depending on your education as well.
What are some of the skills you need to be a customer service representative?
Besides being computer literate, there are some other skills you should have in order to be successful in this career. Certain traits such as: attentiveness, patience, communication, persuasion skills, and tenacity are all extremely important to be successful in reaching customer satisfaction. Without these skills or traits, it can be quite difficult to achieve success in this career.
