How to Keep a Relationship when One of You Studies Abroad

Alexa Johnson

When you’re in a once-in-a-lifetime relationship, it’s tempting to pass up the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study abroad in college. But never again will you get the chance to explore the world and sail the open seas like you will when you’re in college!

So don’t be silly and pass it up for a gal or guy. Instead, use these tips to keep your relationship strong while you or your love is off having the time of their life.

Unfortunately, you can’t see each other face-to-face, which makes communication key while studying abroad. Skype your boyfriend/girlfriend on the regular or post updates on a blog for all your friends and family back home to read. You can even go the vintage, romantic route and send each other snail mail or sweet care packages.

Make sure when you two chat you ask a lot about how their life is back home and not just spill your vacation stories over and over. It’s important to be supportive of your partner and not create jealousy issues. Though it may feel like it, just because you’re scaling the Great Wall of China or ascending the Eiffel Tower doesn’t mean you’re any ‘cooler’ of a person than them.

If you can, why not schedule a visit to see each other? Having your significant other visit Europe could mean it’s finally your time to visit Europe! A fun idea would be to surprise them for a holiday or if their birthday comes up while their away. If you can afford it, it’ll be their best present ever. If you can’t, you can always plan a date over Skype to watch the same movie at the same time, or eat dinner together.

Don’t get too discouraged if your boo doesn’t answer right away. Going away if the two of you are attached at the hip is actually a good way to create some space in the relationship. The best relationships are the ones where two independent people can come together lovingly.

Remember not to miss out on anything while you’re away! After all, you paid all that moola to view all those amazing faraway places. So go out with friends, meet new people, travel over the weekends, and learn. If you’re boyfriend/girlfriend really is the one, they’ll completely understand and be waiting patiently for you upon your arrival home.
