How to Make a Long-Distance Relationship in College

You and your high school sweetheart want to continue your relationship into your college years. It’s not impossible but it is challenging. There are a lot of different ways to make it work if you are willing to put in the work.
1) Send letters.
No, no. no, not emails, Facebook posts, tweets or anything else – actually get a sheet of paper, an envelope and a stamp and write them a letter. It doesn’t even matter what you write about. Write during a class that you are bored in about how you are doing so far at your school. Write about how much you can’t wait to see them again. It doesn’t really matter what you write about, just putting your thoughts on paper and having your significant other be able to open it up and read them will make your communication great. Getting a letter snail mail as a surprise is a great feeling, especially on your down days.
2) Care packages.
Similar to letters – there is nothing better than getting a package in the mail with your name on it from a significant other. It doesn’t matter how big or small the box is that you send them, it is the thought that really matters. Send them a whole box of their favorite candy on a week that they have a lot of exams or homework. Send them something simple like a picture of the two of you from a great memory that the two of you share. There are a lot of ways to get really creative with what you send them and it doesn’t have to break the bank. Mailing a homemade gift is sometimes much better than splurging on something else.
3) Skyping.
Yes, it is great to talk on the phone and text all day long but nothing beats fact-to-face communication. Setting up time every week, whether it is a half hour or more, to dedicate your time solely to your significant other will have great effects on your relationship. Just seeing their face can leave a smile on yours for hours or days after you talk. When you schedule your times to Skype, make sure all other distractions are put away – television, phone, email, etc.
A long-distance relationship can work once you start college – take some of the steps above to see if it is something you can manage.
