How to choose the best university for you

Shelby Carollo recently graduated with her B.A in Music Business from Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. She comes from an Italian family and was born and raised in sunny Sarasota, Florida. She plans to get into Music Marketing and also does freelance writing on the side.

Something that is very important when entering college or even looking for different universities, is making sure that your university fits you. Most young students feel a lot of pressure to quickly get into school and begin their studies. A big aspect of being happy both in school and in life is picking a school and degree program that really interests you.
Speaking from experience, I went out on a limb and attended a specialized school to get my degree in Music Business. I attended Full Sail University, which is a school that mainly focuses on digital arts. They have degree programs such as Film, Recording Arts, Entertainment & Music Business, Mobile Development, etc. Music had always been something I was interested in growing up. When I told my family and family friends about this decision, I constantly got the “Well, what are you going to do with that?”. Now I have recently graduated with my Bachelors in Music Business and I couldn’t be happier. I spent the last few months before graduation looking for different jobs in my field and I am now lucky enough to have several options on the table. I got to spend my entire time in school learning about things I am actually interested in, even keeping all of my notes just because I might need them in the future.
A lot of students graduate with nothing to walk away with because maybe they chose something that wasn’t exactly in their area of interest. Being young, it is hard to know exactly what you want to do but there are ways to narrow it down. If you are unsure of what you want to do in life or you can’t seem to choose the “perfect” degree, you can start by making a little chart for yourself. Yes, it may sound silly but it will help! The first step is to write down three things that really interest you just like this…
1. Music Business
2. Sports Business
3. Internet Marketing
Then you take those three things and think about the potential careers that could come out of a degree in the field.

1. Music Business
a. A&R
b. Music Marketing & Promotion
c. Talent Manager
2. Sports Business
a. Sports Marketing
b. Sports Agent
c. Event Planning
3. Internet Marketing
a. Ad/ Banner Creation (Graphic Design)
b. Web Design
c. Social Media Marketing
So these are just a few things I am interested in. If I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, I now have all these cool careers to research and find out more about. A simple chart like this could help you decide which University to attend or which degree you want to get. Maybe you are really interested in Internet Marketing, now you can begin to look for universities that offer that degree. This is just to help you find your path if you’re unsure, because not everyone knows fresh out of high school what they want to do. Like I said before, you don’t want to pick something that you’re not 100% about. This will result in wasted time and money! Use this method and you could make a decision that will change your life for the best! Good luck!
