Summer workout

I have a very hard time hitting the gym in the summer. I can’t seem to drag myself there no matter how much I bribe myself with a post-gym mani/pedi or trip to the coffee shop for my favorite latte. The truth is that I just don’t like sweating it out on a machine inside when I could be outside enjoying the sun and warm weather. So in my effort to ditch the gym during the warmer months, I made it my mission to find great ways to be outside and burn calories. Let me preface this by saying that I am not a runner. If you are, that is amazing. Just lace up your shoes and go for a nice long run. The heat will help you sweat out the extra toxins. But if you are like me and running isn’t an option, a bit more creativity needs to be involved.
• Remember all of those stairs in your high school stadium. Run them. Stairs are a great calorie blaster, good for the legs and give you a butt to die for. Running stadium stairs for 30 minutes is an incredible workout and you never know who you will bump into along the way.
• Long walks can be just as good as a run as long as you keep up a brisk pace. Grab the dogs and head outside for a nice long walk outside. If your dogs are anything like mine, they will keep you moving at a pretty brisk pace.
• On Saturdays I like to throw on some workout clothes and head out for an urban hike. I just start out in front of my building and start walking. I take streets I’ve never explored and climb every set of stairs I see. Before you know it, 90 minutes will have gone by and you will have worked up a sweat.
• Swimming is another great way to burn calories outside. It never feels like it’s a good workout, because you don’t feel yourself sweating, but swimming is great for building muscle and stretching the body out. Try a few laps every morning and see where it goes from there.
