How to Stop Dressing like a Teenager, and Start Looking like a 20-Something

Somehow in high school, I was willing to put more effort into my outfits than I am now, in college. Maybe it’s because I actually spent all day at school, constantly seeing people, while I only spend 2-3 hours in class a day, so I figure why get dressed up if I’m spending more of the day studying? This has caused me to wear skinny jeans and a plain tee every single day. I’ll change it up sometimes and wear a button-down or a flannel shirt, but overall, I look like a teenager. I’m sure many of you are in the same boat, and know that your style needs to change especially as you get closer to graduating.
Those of you who are like me are probably thinking you should just donate everything in wardrobe and start anew—but slow down! You don’t need a whole new wardrobe! What you have now is actually a great base for your post-college life. You probably just need a few select pieces in order to update your look.
Blazers are a great place to start—you don’t necessarily have to get a black one, if you’re scared of looking too corporate, but they do work well with jeans and a pair of heels. Just make sure that you get one made of a sturdier fabric. The main part of dressing like an adult is buying items that are made well—they’ll last longer and will probably fit you better. As for what you wear underneath, you can continue to wear your favorite t-shirts and even buy ones made from cheaper fabrics. Basically, take what you wear every day and throw a blazer on top, and maybe add a pair of nicer shoes or heels, and voila! You instantly look more put-together and older.
Cardigans work in the same way that blazers do, but again, make sure they are made of higher-end materials and are neutral colors. You’ll get a lot of wear out of these, so like with the blazer, don’t be afraid to spend a little more to get something of quality.
Stick to neutrals. Ditch the crazy colors (unless it’s a quality item and looks fantastic on you) and look to other ways to make your outfits fun—like, add some trendy necklace or earrings, or a fun pair of heels. Focus on streamlining your look and adding one item that packs a lot of punch to show of your style.
