Do I have to work my way up to be a talent manager?
You cannot just walk into an agency and expect to be a talent manager without any experience whatsoever. Like all managers, you will have to work your way up. Many start off as assistants or entry-level positions and will slowly work their way up. It can be a difficult few years since the pay may not be ideal and you may not thoroughly enjoy what you do. The thing to remember is that despite the lower pay, you are working your way up and in your journey towards becoming a talent manager. What type of skills do I need to have?
Many talent managers have the same skills. In order to be successful, you will need to have great negotiation skills. A lot of times you will have to negotiate with a potential employer on behalf of whoever you are representing. You want to get the best possible pay and terms for them and in order to do that you have to be firm but charismatic at the same time. You also have to be even-keeled when things go awry so that your clients feel secure.
Being a people person doesn’t hurt either. You want to be able to get along with everyone and likeable. Your likeability factor can come into play during negotiations and also help you get top notch performers or athletes. You have to remember that your reputation will always precede you, so it’s best to put your best foot forward at all times.
Managers who are socially perceptive also can be more successful than others. Knowing how to read people and their body language is a great asset to have. Besides have contacts in the industry, it’s highly beneficial to understand the people you work with and know what makes them satisfied. If you have been told you “get” people without them having to really say anything, then you are socially perceptive.
