If you are attracted to the idea of being a florist, you would probably enjoy a number of different artistic professions, such as crafting or interior designing. You might also be interested in careers that have to do with planning and decoration, such as event planning.

Crafts and Fine Artists

Crafters and other similar artists use a variety of materials and techniques to create artwork that they will sell or display at exhibits. Craft artists focus on functional or utilitarian objects, such as pottery, vases, textiles, and glassware. Fine artists create work more for its aesthetic appeal, such as painting and sculptures. The responsibilities of this profession include developing ideas for new artwork, including new methods by which to make the art; create sketches, templates, or other models; process materials; employ different techniques to create the art; and display their work in galleries, at trade shows, or in online marketplaces. There are a number of sub-professions to this field, including cartoonists, ceramic artists, furniture makers, glass artists, illustrators, jewelry makers, print makers, and sculptors. There is no formal educational requirement, although some people earn a bachelor’s or even master’s degree in fine arts. Craft artists make an average of around $30,000 a year, while fine artists make a bit more – around $45,000 annually.

Interior Designers

Interior designers make spaces both functional and beautiful by designing different elements for a room and decorating them by choosing options for the walls, floors, furniture, and upholstery. Job responsibilities include searching for and bidding on new projects, speaking with clients to determine their goals for a space, and sketching design plans that include elements such as windows and electrical outlets. They also choose what materials to use, such as different fabrics, wood finishes, and light fixtures; place orders for the materials; and work on a set timetable to meet important deadlines. They often work with architects, engineers, and construction workers to make sure that their designs are implemented smoothly. Some people specialize in a particular type of design, such as bathroom, kitchen, universal, and sustainable design. Programs for interior designers are available at the associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree level, although most people earn a bachelor’s degree. They make an average of about $47,600 a year.

Meeting, Convention, and Event Planners

People in this profession coordinate all the different aspects that go into planning a meeting or event. Responsibilities include meeting with the clients who are putting on the event, planning the scope of the event (such as location and cost), and soliciting bids from important vendors (such as photographers, caterers, and florists). They coordinate all the services that are included in the event or meeting, such as transportation, catering, and lodging; monitor activities while they are occurring; and approve payments for different event bills. Some people have a subspecialty within this field and become association planners, corporate planners, event or nonprofit event planners, government meeting planners, or convention service managers. Most people have a bachelor’s degree in one of many relevant fields, such as business, public relations, or hospitality management. The average salary for people in the profession is around $46,000 annually.
