Oil Cleansing for Beginners: Why You Need to Start

Oil cleaning has been a major skin trend for a while now but it is a bandwagon that people are hesitant to jump on board. If you are worried that adding oil to your skin because you think that it will make it oily, think again!

One of the best things about oil cleansing is that you can completely personalize it to your skin’s unique needs. You may need to experiment for a few weeks to get just the right combination but it is well worth it.

There are many different oil options out there but the most basic blend uses castor oil and olive oil.

Once you have a blend made for your skin, add a dab to your hand (about the size of a quarter). Do not get your face wet in advance, just massage the mixture into your skin. Use a gentle circular motion for about two minutes. If you are wearing eye makeup, massage over your eyes last. This works great as a makeup remover so don’t worry about using a separate product. For a great weekly mask, just let the oil sink into your skin for about ten minutes to get the maximum benefits.

After you have massage the oil into your skin, get a clean wash cloth and soak it with warm water. Hold it over your face and let your skin absorb the steam. Gently wipe away the oil until your skin feels clean. Don’t scrub and don’t worry about leaving a bit of residue- this is good for your skin!

Since this is a customized method, keep trying until you find the blend that is right for you. Your skin may need some time to adjust so don’t give up if you don’t love the results after the first couple of days. Experiment with different blends for a week until you can decide what feels right for you.

People do react very differently to different types of oils so pay attention to your skin! If you find that olive oil makes you breakout, try sunflower seed oil or hazelnut oil. Another popular blend works with equal parts of castor oil, olive oil, and grapeseed oil. You can also add in a few drops of essential oil. Lavender is a popular option for it’s soothing scent while tea tree is great for it’s antiseptic value. Tea tree oil may be a bit harsh for everyday use but it is a great option for when you are dealing with breakouts.

The washcloth that you use is also very important. Your best option is to have a different washcloth for every single day. You can even cut up an old towel if you prefer but just make sure that you are using a fresh clean one every time you wash.
