How to become a high school principal

This is one profession that requires further schooling after high school. In fact, education professionals are required to have a masters degree in addition to an undergraduate education. Most colleges offer an undergraduate program in education. In addition, because the field of education has a profound effect on the children and youth going through the system, it is especially important that students of education have the following personality traits and interests:
• Patience: High school takes place during some of the most formative years in a person’s life. Peer pressure combined with media influence can sometimes create a negative impact in a youth’s behavior and outlook on life. Educators, especially principals, need to take this into consideration and have the patience to work with these youths to guide them to lead them by example and provide them with the appropriate resources to help them make the right decisions in life. It’s definitely not an easy task and educators have the highest stress jobs in the field, but the rewards can be very satisfying.
• Interest in working with children: If you are not interested in working with children and youth, then education is definitely not for you. It doesn’t matter that education is one of the more stable professions, you have to like working with your clients, or in this case, your students. It’s not a dictatorial exercise, it’s about collaborating with students to help them learn and understand the world by gaining various skills.
• Passion for education: Education is an evolving field, especially when technology plays a central role in the delivery of the material. High school principals have to be interested in dedicating their career to education, to inspire teachers to introduce new methods in teaching that will stimulate a positive learning environment. At the same time, principals need to work with the school district to secure enough funding to invest in the latest infrastructure to help deliver the content to the students. This is not an easy task to do since most school boards are facing budget cuts these days. Principals not only have a tough position of making the most out of their meager budgets, but they are often measured based on students’ performance (which usually is a criteria for funding). As a result, they need to work closely with the teachers to maintain a certain quality of teaching so that students have the potential to achieve top marks in national exams.
• Willingness to work towards change and continuous improvement: The education system is not perfect. High school principals are the champions of change in making sure that the education system aligns with the current needs of the students and introduce initiatives that will improve the quality of instruction which students receive in the classroom. They constantly have to look for ways to improve students’ experience inside and outside of the classroom to ensure that they have all the resources they need to succeed in school and beyond.
In conclusion, being a high school principal isn’t always easy. In fact, it is much harder to be an administrator of the educational system than being a teacher. It’s a balancing act between having sufficient resources and meeting the needs of a diverse group of students. However, they are at the forefront of change and when implemented correctly, it can be a very satisfying and rewarding career.
