Plaid: A Simple Fashion Statement

My name is Christa. I am 22 years old and I am working towards my Bachelor’s degree in Professional Writing at Kutztown University, located in Pennsylvania. I love all different kinds of writing. I particularly enjoy writing for blogs and websites. I am passionate about instrumental music as well, and am an avid member of all the instrumental ensembles my schedule can handle.

My fashion style is one of simplicity. I enjoy wearing whatever is comfortable, which is something I think most college students definitely relate to. However, there are some days I wake up and feel like making an effort. There are a lot of ways to do this, but I believe one of the easiest ways to make an effort without making much of an effort at all is to choose an outfit with some sort of interesting pattern present. For me, this go-to is plaid. Plaid has soared in popularity within the last few years, particularly with the younger crowd. Walk into any clothing store in the mall and you’re likely to find items with a plaid design—whether they’re shirts, skirts, or jackets. With all the plaid that’s out there, you’re bound to be able to fit it into your outfit.

A choice for any style

Plaid is quite adaptable, which probably has a lot to do with its popularity. If worn a certain way, there is something “punk” and different about it. A popular campus look for girls who wish to avoid looking too preppy or proper is the wearing of a loose plaid shirt, black leggings, and black boots. This look is topped off perfectly with a loose knit beanie. A similar look for guys is incredibly common (except the leggings are substituted with black skinny jeans, of course) and it looks great. In this case, plaid remains casual—but it definitely provides a lot of style. Plus, it makes you look like you put a little effort into your outfit rather than just rolling out of bed and throwing on those sweatpants.

But maybe casual isn’t really your thing. Maybe you want to look more “chic.” To achieve this, some girls may choose to wear a plaid dress and high heels. This is a great way to achieve a formal look that’s cute, but not too fancy. A simple light-colored plaid shirt, jeans, and heels also allows for a chic look. And if “outdoorsy” is more of your thing, plaid definitely helps you here. A thick plaid button-up shirt with torn jeans and work boots? Instantly rugged. As you can see, plaid is able to fit into any crowd you want to fit into yourself—no matter what!

Any material, any season, any color

Another thing that makes plaid so great is that it never quite fell into any particular season; therefore, it stays in style year-round. In winter, plaid jackets are all the rage. In warmer seasons, plaid skirts, shorts, and simple button-up shirts are widely popular. Plaid shoes and leggings are popular among the college population as well. It also comes in any color imaginable so you can keep darker colors for colder seasons and lighter colors for warmer ones. Additionally, plaid is not limited to a particular material. Warm wool, nylon, cotton, polyester, silk…if you can think of it, it’ll come in plaid.

This semester, consider including more plaid in your wardrobe—no matter what season it’ll be when you return to school. Regardless of what style you love to rock the most, plaid can help you do it.
