Bank teller customer service skills

In a financially-driven society, banking is an important function in most people’s everyday lives. However, the emergence of internet and telephone banking has not diminished the value of bank tellers as people still prefer to have their questions and concerns addressed in person. Bank tellers are often customers’ first point of contact at a bank and as a result, they are important brand ambassadors for the company.

While a formal education is not required to be a bank teller, most students tend to use this position as a stepping stone to foray into a career in the finance sector. As a result, a number of students will pursue an undergraduate education in business before joining the bank as a teller. However, that is not the only way to begin your career as a teller. In fact, because the position of a teller requires constant interfacing with customers, the bank tends to hire people who have great communication skills in addition to competency in basic calculations and computer skills.
Bank tellers tend to work regular hours within an office/retail environment. However, some banks may stay open later or even open on Saturdays to accommodate their clients’ schedules. As a result, some tellers may be required to do shift work. On a daily basis, tellers are responsible for clients’ deposits and withdraws from their accounts as well as special requests such as currency exchange, bill payments and cheque orders. On some occasions, bank tellers may be required to recommend products and services to customers who may be an appropriate fit.
A bank teller’s career can go in a number of paths, including becoming a branch manager, who focuses on the administrative aspects of banking. Some bank tellers advance to positions of account management, where they manage clients’ daily banking and investment portfolios. Others, especially those with a degree in finance, may advance to management positions in the areas operations, financial analysis, insurance or mortgages. All these roles have one thing in common: great customer service. With so many financial institutions to choose from in the US, clients can afford to take their assets and investments anywhere. As a result, bank’s top priority in maintaining the integrity of their brand is through communication, transparency and customer service.
A career at a bank can be a very rewarding experience. Banks tend to provide decent pay and great benefits to their employees and the hours are very regular. Because most banks are large organizations, there are numerous opportunities to advance your career and develop further training to hone in your skills.
