Streamlining your Makeup Collection

So many of us have collected dozens of tubes of makeup over the years—I’m sure I’m not the only one with an overflowing makeup bag. The problem is that I use so little of it. I have a few go-to products that I use every day and the rest is for ‘special occasions,’ or so I tell myself. Well, with spring cleaning and all, maybe it’s time to cut back and just keep the products that I really can’t live without. Here’s my top five beauty products—maybe this can help you narrow down which items you want to keep and which ones you can toss.
1. Mascara. I have three tubes of it right now, one for big voluminous lashes, one for a more natural look, and one waterproof. I plan to throw them all out once past their expiration date (only keep mascara for about 3 months, ladies!) and choose just one that is waterproof and good for daily use, but can be layered on for an evening look.
2. Eyeliner. I don’t feel human unless I have a little on my upper-eyelids, and so have ended up with an entire collection of liners. I just can’t seem to throw them out. It’s time to streamline, though, and just keep two—one black liquid liner and one every day pencil liner.
3. Mineral face powder. I have a combination face that, sans makeup, is a mess from years of acne, and the best face powder I have found thus far to even out my complexion and dry up the oil is mineral face powder. I experimented with liquid foundation and compact foundation, but mineral powder is where it’s at. And a little concealer, of course!
4. Red lipstick. A bright, vibrant red. I don’t wear it often, but when I do I feel like I look completely different and oh so sophisticated. This is the one product I’ll keep for ‘special occasions’ only.
5. Moisturizer. My friends and I have gone through our fair share of experimentation with facial moisturizers, and by sophomore year we realized that we all use the same one. It is light and still moisturizing, plus it contains some salicylic acid, which is great for those of us with acne-prone skin. This is one product I refuse to give up.
What do you think? Could you ditch all of your other products in favor of just five? Try making a list of your top five, like I did, and then ask yourself that question. Seeing it on paper makes me realize how unnecessary all of the other products cluttering up my cabinet actually are. I’m ready to streamline my collection, how about you?
