Hello! My name is Lucia Rodriguez and I’m 20 years old. I am from El Paso, Texas and I am currently a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at the University of Texas at El Paso. I was born here in El Paso, but I was race part of my childhood in Mexico. I came back to the United States when I was about 12 years old. I choose to major in computer science because I have always been interested in computers. At first I chose Electrical and Computer Engineering but latter I realized that what I actually wanted to work with the software instead of the hardware. I look forward on completing my bachelor degree and working for an important company and hopefully the FBI.
Imagine you could visit a country that you have always wanted to visit, imagine you could make your dream of experiencing new cultures come true. That is what studying abroad offers students. Study abroad is a program that will allow you to travel as a student to any country that you choose. I mean who wouldn’t want to do something like that?! It sounds super cool! Trust me it’s worth it.
Summer 2014 was the best summer of my life. I have never thought or imagine that studying will make up such a wonderful memory. I had always wanted to travel around the world, it has been my dream since I was a little girl. When I first heard about the Study Abroad program in my school I wasn’t really convince by it. I remember I use to think “Oh yeah how much fun could it be if I’m just going to be studying the whole time, pffft I don’t think so.” So I went to the meeting, and my friend was all excited about the program so she dragged me along with her. We chose to travel to Cali, Colombia.
And so our journey began. When we got to Colombia we couldn’t believe how beautiful the nature was. You could see green all around you, for some of you it might not seemed extraordinary but for some like me who comes from a dessert it feels like seeing paradise. I can still smell the freshness and the greenness of Colombia. The school was also amazing, it was nothing like I imagined it to be. I have to admit that their education system is one of the best that I have ever been expose to. The professors and the students were so nice to us. It is impressing how nice Colombians treat people from other countries. I also have to mention that I was totally wrong when I thought that it was going to be all about school.
During the day, we attended to classes. We would study just like how we did at home. But once we were done with our responsibilities we would go out to have lots of fun. Sometimes we didn’t even needed to go out because people at school where so nice to us that we didn’t wanted to leave them at all. We met people that took us all around town during our free time. We went to so many beautiful places, places that I will never forget and that I will give everything to go back to them. There is a lot of beauty here in the United States, but the beauty that my eyes were exposed to is just unimaginable.
Summer 2014 was the best summer that I have ever had in my whole life. I experience such amazing things that I will never forget. Please if you have the opportunity to be part of such an amazing experience don’t even think about giving it second thoughts. Get informed if you school offers the study abroad program and please get involved I guarantee that you will not regret it.
