What Am I Going To Be When I Grow Up?

Pressure, pressure, pressure. This is what I felt through my college years to decide what I was going to be when I “grew up”. What does “Grown Up” really mean anyway? Does it mean officially out of college age? Or later? Did you know that the average person goes through a number of career changes in their working life? So does everyone have to know what they are going to be when they grow up, or do they go with it along the way and figure it out step by step?

While I was in college, everyone around me would ask me these type of questions along with a feeling of pressure if I didn’t find the answer right away. I remember feeling like, “oh no! What am I going to be so that I don’t waste all of my college degree?!” But, this is ridiculous. To be honest with you, I didn’t know anything about what I wanted to do in life until a few specific key events in my college career that made up my mind. One day I was sitting in a social media class, (for my Public Relations major), and we were giving presentations about people who have made major impacts on the world through social media. This one classmate started talking about this girl who in just a couple years had started a fashion blog and branded herself as a fashion icon.  She got to do something she loved, in her own way, and build up the brand she wanted for herself, and get paid pretty well for it. This day I remember clearly, because it’s the day I started my own brand.

The next event that really impacted me shortly after I started my new blog, was this lecture I was listening to. In the lecture the speaker said that people can be great at lots of things, but they take your energy away. But, that people need to find that thing that you’re not only good at, but also that gives you energy, or that you don’t get tired from. Is there anything in your life that you can do for hours by choice and not notice how much time has gone by? This is the thing you should start with.

Even though I feel like I have found my passion and love, doesn’t mean that’s where I will be for the rest of my life. In fact, I know it will change. But, maybe not in the way I thought before. I think that when I start my path of what I want to do, over time I will get a new opportunity through the first one that I will take on, and maybe from there another one, who knows. But, you can’t start with no goal and expect to have one accomplished for you. This is the beauty in it. When you start reaching for something you love, and really pursue it, something comes in your way that gives you opportunity, and you get to decide to hang on to it, or let it pass you by and choose another.

So, remember this next time someone asks you the question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” You get to see what adventure you want for right now, and you can worry about the rest as it comes your way. And enjoy it all.
