As with all careers and professions, there will be pros and cons. Being a talent manager, you can experience a variety of pros and cons to this career. • You can have a great salary. During the beginning stages of being a talent manager, you may think that you salary is sub-par. However as your reputation grows, you may find that your salary will increase quickly as well. Most earnings are based on commission, which is determined by which agency you work for. For those who are self-employed, you can determine what your rate will be.
• You can be the discoverer of new talent. How fulfilling it can be to be the discoverer of up and coming talent. There are many talent managers who can bypass potential talent, but if you are able to find a person, develop and nurture them, your reputation as a talent manager can go through the roof. If your gut tells you to take a chance on a person, then maybe you should, you never know what the future brings.
• You will earn free perks. Many talent managers will be given exclusive entry to the hottest parties and celeb filled events. Sometimes you will be given these great perks for free without any cost out of your pocket. Of course, you must realize that these perks will ultimately depend on who you know and how your reputation is in the industry.
• Your list of contacts and network will continue to grow. It’s highly important in the beginning stages of your career to develop a great list of contacts. These contacts will not only help you later on in your career, but they can prove to be beneficial later on when you need favors.
Cons
• You will have an abnormal schedule. Being a talent manager means long and odd hours. At times you will always be on the clock especially if you are managing a high profile celebrity. You may be required to put your personal life on hold in order to be successful in this career.
• It will take you time to become a successful talent manager. A successful talent manager doesn’t occur overnight. It takes years of hard work and dedication to build yourself up to where you want to be. You may start off as an assistant in an agency and need to work your way up. Again the hours can be grueling and your personal life may seem non-existent.
• You will work with difficult people. You will have to deal with abrasive and rude people on a daily basis. In fact, some may be your clients. It can be very exhausting to deal with difficult people on a daily basis, especially if you have a hard time with people in general. This career is definitely a better choice for those who enjoy working with others.
