For the past two years at work, I haven’t really been into makeup. I wasn’t used to it, so it made me feel like a clown. I didn’t like it, I didn’t wear it, and when I saw a heavily painted face, I sometimes wondered if that person was trying to cover something more than skin deep.
All of this, however, was before the onset of red lipstick day.
All prejudices aside, I have always been a fan of red lipstick. I think it’s classy, and I think the women who wear it tend to be bold, unashamed, world changers. I’d read in magazines that many women were afraid to wear red lipstick, for fear of standing out too much, looking overdone, or generally drawing too much attention to themselves.
“Wait a second,” I thought to myself; “I don’t want to be one of those women! I want to be BOLD!”
So one day, just for fun, I walked into a makeup store and asked a sales rep to help me out. We found a shade that worked for me. I practiced putting it on several times (applying red lipstick is a marketable skill, and if you can do it competently, I advise adding it to your resume), and then, one day when I was feeling brave, wore it to work.
Heads turned. Men did double takes. Women pulled me aside and said, “NICE, WORK. I could never pull it off, but NICE, WORK.”
And now I make sure to have frequent “red lipstick” days, just to make sure people know that I know I’m awesome. Which I think is a good thing to keep in mind–particularly during one’s stressful time in college.
So I think the moral of the story is…
What “look” have you always admired on classy women that you never thought you could pull off?
I think you should try it.
I think you would be blown away by the results.
