Passion and love for music is only one component of becoming successful in this career. There are other traits and skills you will need to consider and are required to have. Continue reading to learn about which skills you need to have to be a successful musician.
• Musical talent. You don’t need to be a prodigy, but you should have some talent with the instrument you wish to play. The reason why musical ability is important to have as a skill is because it can determine how successful your career is. So consider deeply which path you wish to choose.
• Self-discipline. In order to reach your full potential as a musician, you will need to take the time and practice. Sometimes this practice can take hours of your day and sometimes you may not feel like playing. However it takes the self-discipline to do things consistently even on the days you may not want to.
• Perseverance and motivation. This is a highly competitive career and you will have to often compete with the best of the best in order to even be considered for the position. Understand and know that you should not take things personally if you don’t get the job you wish or the listing you auditioned for. There are plenty of musicians out there who are trying to fulfill and pursue the same career as you and at times they can or may perform better than you. This is why practice and self-discipline are so crucial.
• Punctuality. You never want to be the person that people have to wait on, especially if it’s a large group of people. Don’t be that person. If you know you run late or have poor time management, make sure to take the extra time you need to prepare yourself. It’s a terrible first impression if you are late to an audition so always be early.
• Ability to work well with others. More often than not, you will have to work with a group of other musicians. It’s important and essential that you all get along and are able to work as a group together. If you can’t work with groups or grow a reputation from it, it doesn’t bode well for you and your career.
• Strength and stamina. Musicians are stronger than they look so you will need to have the necessary stamina to perform for long periods of time. Make sure to be active and have a healthy lifestyle. Also by practicing for long hours, you will build the stamina you need to perform easily for an extended period of time.
• Confidence. When going to auditions or even when performing onstage, it’s important to be confident in front of your audience. People never watch someone who is unsure of their actions. This doesn’t mean you have to have the self-confidence of a rock star but you should be sure of your talent and your ability to showcase it in front of your audience.
