Video game designer skills

Besides being great with coding and computers, there are some other skills you should have in order to be a successful game designer. Game designers must make sure whatever game they are creating meets all the core needs the company wants. In order to do this, they will need to interact with others and also have certain personality traits to execute this task effectively. Here are some of the skills you should have as a game designer.
• The ability to work alone or as a team. There will be times where you will be designated a certain task to complete alone and then there will be times when you will have to work with a team. You must be able to vacillate seamlessly between the two in order to be successful.
• You must have strong communication skills. Since there will be times you will have to work with groups of people, it’s important to be able to communicate with your team members and also with your superiors. You must be able to communicate your vision and help intertwine it with the vision of the other people on your team. If you stay mum or quiet about a subject or vision you don’t agree on, you can and will create discord between you and your team. Besides having great verbal skills, you also need to have great written skills as well. As with verbal communication, you need to be able to express yourself clearly and concisely to those around you.
• You must be fluent in computers and gaming software. As a game designer it is imperative that you are fluent in a range of graphics and animation packages. Besides knowing how to navigate and operate these programs, you will also need to know the terms for them as well. If you find yourself not familiar with a certain animation package, it is your priority and duty to make sure you familiarize yourself with it. This will make you more well-rounded as a gaming designer and may give you more opportunities down your career path.
• You must be creative and imaginative. With so many video games on the market today, you must find even more creative ways to make unique content. It can be a hard task but companies are always looking for people who have a unique eye and approach to game designing. Be innovative and think out of the box.
• You must be able to tell a story. Besides beautiful graphics, people who play games want to have a great story to follow. Despite how pretty a game is, if the story is not strong or the narrative is all over the place, gamers will not approve of the game. In order to help your narrative skills, you may want to take up reading and writing as hobbies. Reading will help you see how authors tell cohesive stories and writing will help you to think creatively and help you develop your narrative skills.
