Rehabilitation counselor skills

There are certain people in this world that need help to get back on their feet after emotional or physical trauma has occurred. This is why it is important to have rehabilitation counselors. The duty and main task of these counselors are to rehab the patient from the effects of the disability. The disabilities can be physical and there are times they will be emotional too. So it’s highly important that the person tasked with this job can handle and understand the psychological issues that can arise with these disabilities. • Patience. Those with a lack of patience need not apply to this job. It can take hours, even days to even begin the healing process for someone’s rehabilitation. You cannot have your patient see that you are frustrated, angry, or annoyed with them because they are not moving at a pace that is convenient for you. There will be times when they need a prod or push in the right direction but even then, gentle persuasion is the solution.
• Compassion. Being compassionate and empathetic in this career is a must. You will often have to work with people who are dealing with very difficult and stressful situations. While you need to always be professional, it doesn’t mean you can’t empathize with how they are feeling and see things from their perspective. In fact, it may be better to be empathetic and compassionate to understand where they are coming from because you then might be able to find a solution that is best suited for them.
• Active listening skills. You always need to pay full attention to what your clients say to you. By being an active listener, you can address their needs and also understand their concerns, problems, likes and dislikes. Remember that many times, clients just want someone who will listen to them without judgment or biased. They often feel alone or are afraid to speak their feelings because they don’t want to be critiqued or judged.
• Interpersonal skills. In this career, you will be dealing with all types of personalities so it’s very important that you always maintain a professional but solid working relationship with all your clients, employers, and any other professionals you will be dealing with. Just because they don’t have the same outlook as you doesn’t mean their opinions or ideas are not valid. Always keep an open mind.
• Communication skills. It’s important to be a great listener, but it is equally important to be able to communicate with your clients effectively as well. You will need to be able to express your ideas and thoughts in a way that can be easily understood by the other party. It’s extremely important to think before you speak and gather all your information and properly express, you never want your client to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about what they are going through.
