Sophomore slump college

Quinn Li O’Shea is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer ScienceEconomics
at Brown University. She enjoys playing tennis, shopping, and indulging her inner
foodie as relaxation. As an aspiring entrepreneur and designer, she hopes to one day launch her
own line of clothing that will permanently change the fashion world.
Almost everyone has heard of the “sophomore slump” and yet, only when
you’re experiencing it do you really understand the second year blues. Over the
past few years, I’ve talked to a lot of people and everyone’s experience is a little
different. For some, it’s social while others have hard times staying focused or
motivated. Of course there are the lucky students who evade it and hopefully with
a little push from yours truly, you will too.
First and foremost, sit down and reflect on the last semester and then year.
Many mid-semester crises have been born of realizations someone isn’t doing what
they are actually enjoying. So be proactive, think about what it was you really
enjoyed, then what would consistently bring you down, and just make a pact with
yourself to change that. It doesn’t have to be a large pact- one of mine was to eat
more pho. Just making it and trying to follow through will make you more aware
of the boost in happiness you get from it and hopefully, other activities.
My second tip to you is to expect change. Not saying your life will be turned
upside down, but most likely classes will get harder, you and your peers will be
more serious stressed about school, the friendships made out of convenience and
the haze of freshman optimism will be harder to maintain (it’s sad but it happens to
the best of us). Sophomore year can be crazy and no one likes to feel out of
1control, but a big part of growing into it is letting the transitions happen and
changing with them
My final advice can really can apply to any aspect in life but whether you’re in
your fourth semester of college or a full grown adult, the following things are easy
to forget to do and they really make a difference:
1. Relax. No matter how crazy life is, set aside the time to let yourself
recharge at least for an hour or two during the week.
2. Eat and sleep. I’ve learned the hard way that ignoring your basic human
needs is not worth it. Even if it’s a bag of popcorn at 4 a.m. that only gets half
eaten because you desperately needed a 2 hour nap, thats okay!
3. Not everything you do needs a purpose. Despite what we’re told the first
decades or so of our lives, when people ask why we’re doing something we need
no better answer than “Why not?”.
Hopefully you’ll have an amazing sophomore year and you won’t need my list
at all, but if you feel yourself slipping, just remember that everyone is going
through the same things and at the end of the day, everything will be alright.
