Why You Should Attend Beauty School

In today’s economy, it is easy to get discouraged about job prospects. Everywhere you look you see companies laying-off workers and cutting back on employee hours and benefits. However, there is a career that offers an exciting combination of creativity, flexibility and career advancement potential. That career is cosmetology. Here are three main reasons why you should attend beauty school.

Financial Rewards

With the cost of a four-year college education skyrocketing, beauty school offers an affordable way to get the training you need to get on the job and to start earning money quickly.

The cost of a college degree today can range anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000 and college is crippling graduates with loan debt. According to The Project on Student Debt, two-thirds of 2011 college graduates had student loan debt, with an average of $26,600 in debt per borrower. By contrast, tuition and costs for attending beauty school certificates can range from $5,000 to $25,000.

What’s more important is that while many college graduates are struggling to find work, beauty school grads often have many job opportunities right out of school. In fact, most beauty schools help to place their students in jobs as part of the program they offer.

According to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), the average annual income for cosmetologists is about $32,000 per year, not including gratuities. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects job growth to be strong — at 14 percent — through 2020.

Cosmetologists have the ability to choose their hours and to develop their own clientele. This feeling of being your own boss is an invaluable perk of the career.
Many salons offer their stylists the opportunity of working around their family’s schedule. For parents, this flexibility means that you can be home when your kids get home from school, for example. Beauty school grads also have a selection of job locations from which to choose, such as hair salons, health clubs make-up studios, or spas. Cosmetologists who specialize will have the best chances for advancement. According to the BLS, demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other hair treatments has increased in the past decade and will continue to do so over the next 10 years.

Cosmetology is a perfect field to get into if you want to own you own business as well. Many beauty school grads find that they can transfer their skills and expertise into owning and operating their own salons.

Job Satisfaction

Perhaps the best reason to go to beauty school is that you will be doing something you enjoy that will help people look and feel better about themselves.

Think about it. Your clients come to you expecting a good outcome. They don’t come to you with a complaint or a problem. Working in this pleasant atmosphere has hidden and not-so hidden benefits.
