Word to the Wise: Always Have Faith

Hey, my name is Tiara Raman and I am from East Stroudsburg, Pa. I am currently a junior studying for a Bachelor’s of Science in International Business at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). I tend to think of myself as a vivacious self-driven leader. Being the president of International Business Association and the senior vice president of the College of Business Student Advisory Council here at IUP has provided me with the opportunity to further advance myself in the business world and has given me a more conscientious view on the decisions we, as college students, often times make. When you decide, you choose and the greatest influence of that choice should be your faith.
Being a college student may be fun, at times, but as with every great adventure in life it comes with its fair share of difficulties. What I have come to realize through the years is that no matter what transpires you have to have faith. When people hear the word ‘faith’ their mind tends to gravitate towards religion, however that is not necessarily what I am talking about. You can have faith in anyone and/or anything that your heart desires. “…faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”(Hebrews 11:1 NIV)
When you get to college you are presented with countless opportunities, both good and bad, and it up to you to obtain the wisdom needed in order to decide which opportunities you should take and which ones you should not. Sometimes we lose sight of the main reason why we are in college in the first place, to learn. We let others influence us or the ‘hype’ of what is around us take over. Instead of being wise and relying on our faith we make decisions based upon the here and now and what we hope to gain from the experience. Whether that be going to a party and falling under the influence or subjecting yourself to the wrong group of people. We all stumble and fall because no one is perfect, but what you do when you get up makes all the difference. Every opportunity is a moment to learn and the wise will take advantage of that. “The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.” (Ecclesiastes 7:4 NIV)
Having faith and being in college does not mean you cannot have fun. It doesn’t mean you can’t party and reward yourself when the opportunity presents itself. It means that there are boundaries to which you will allow yourself to go when ‘having a good time’. Simply having faith in your future says that you know when to say enough is enough and when to go left when everyone else is going right. Having faith ultimately means you believe in something, often times that something is beyond yourself, but you do not have to be religious to have faith. My faith is in myself and in God. Be sure you know what you have faith in because without it you will get lost, but just know with faith there is always a way back.
