My name is Jazmin Washington and I am a current student at the University of Houston. My birthday is August 8, 1993 and I love makeup, fashion, and writing. I am an English major with a minor in Journalism. My ultimate dream is to move to New York and be a successful writer and work for a magazine publication.
Many people have the misconception that all you can wear to work are black slacks, a white blouse, and simple shoes. In today’s fashion, that is not true anymore. Many women are wearing more and more colors in corporate offices, and are looking good doing it! I know a few people who never wear boring clothes to work and they look fabulous. I believe that no matter what your job is, there are more ways to style yourself other than the boring black and white. I believe that there will always be a way to put your personality into professional dress no matter what job you have. If you know how to mix colors well, that’s only step one of the process! Step two is finding pieces that go well together and flatter your figure while also being appropriate for work. A crop top and high waisted shorts or a skater skirt are NOT going to cut it no matter how long your socks or how big your oversized sweaters are. While this is true, don’t think you can’t actually pull off a crop top in the work office (because you can). If you’re confident in yourself, go for it. A nice (long) crop top with nice trousers and a blazer could work for pretty much anyone. And that’s just the basics. Once you become familiar with what works and what doesn’t, putting pieces together becomes a piece of cake!
If you have ever heard of the phrase, “less is more,” then you have the base already set up. Cakey-looking makeup in the office can get annoying especially in a high stress environment such as an office. Work is not the time to experiment with new colors that (you think) may or may not work. Leave playing with color to going out with friends, going on a date with your boyfriend, or spending time with your family. In my eyes, the simpler, the better. If you want to go a little bold, a little smokey eye never hurt anyone! Just do not overdo it. You still want to look professional while showing off a little bit of your personality at the same time. A great work makeup look, for example, starts off with tinted moisturizer, a little eyeliner/mascara, and a bold lip; and that’s where the fun is.
Dressing or applying makeup for work is way more fun than doing it for an interview, because while you want to show off who you are, you also want to keep it a little conservative to make a great lasting impression and let your employer know that you mean business while also knowing how to be fun. Once you get the hang of dressing more stylishly with more color, the more fun it gets! I know this from personal experience. It took a long time for me to get out of the habit of always wearing black, but once I stepped out of my shell and took a chance, it has definitely benefit me for the better!
